AAPG Program Support-2010 Boy Scouts of America

National Jamboree Progress Report

July 26-August 4, 2010

Boy Scouts of America attended the National Jamboree in Fort AP Hill, Virginia in 2010. Scouts can earn the Geology Merit Badge while at the Jamboree. A total of 360 Scouts received this badge. The requirements include instructing Scouts in basic geology and career options in the energy industry.

In a classroom set-up, the badge area offers geologic maps, a rock and mineral collection, and internet-based videos of the BP Macondo well blowout. It is the largest accidental marine oil spill in the history of the petroleum industry. The spill stemmed from a sea-floor oil gusher that resulted from the April 20, 2010 explosion of the Deepwater Horizon oil drilling platform.

A team of ten geologists attended the event for the Geology Merit Badge program and over 500 Scouts and adult leaders. Seven out of ten merit badge instructors are AAPG members.
