Thomas Edwards Matson

Don Freeman TobinThomas Edwards Matson, 94, beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather, died Wednesday, June 15, 2011 at his residence.

Thomas was born May 30, 1917, in Washington, D.C. to Mary Beulah and George Charlton Matson. He attended school in Tulsa, and graduated from Oklahoma University. Dad recently received a 75-year award from Phi Gamma Delta.

Thomas was a meteorologist in the United States Army and during that time, he met and married Virginia Rose Matych August 19, 1943, at Christ the King Catholic Church. After a brief stay in Ardmore, OK, Thomas and Virginia made their home in Tulsa.

Thomas, following in his father's footsteps, pursued the life of an independent oilman, founding Gemini Oil Company, Matson Mineral Company and Matson Royalty Company.

Thomas is survived by his sister, Barbara Twaddle, Glenview, IL. Children: Susan and Phillip Gelwick, Kathryn and Victor Holmes, Thomas E. Matson, Jr., Dee Dee and Steve Geddie. Grandchildren: Betsy and Michael Fellwock, Amy Bailey, Jill and Jeromy Garcia, Pamela and John Oliver, Christopher Gelwick, Chandra and Scott Ray, Clifton Holmes and fiancée, Megan Yoder, Candace and Jonathan Balch, Wendeline and Shane Matson, Sara Beth and Jim Westover, Stephanie and Michael Geddie and Stephanie Geddie. Great- Grandchildren: Connor Charlton Bailey, Iain Alexander Templeton, Bailey Thomas and Beckett Jeromy Garcia, Caroline Matson and Harrison Mayfield Balch, Miller Kings and Paulo Thomas Matson, and Cody James Westover. Thomas' 10th great-grandchild is due in December.

Thomas was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Virginia, and brother, George Charlton Matson, Jr.

In lieu of flowers, friends may contribute to Thomas' favorite charities, Philbrook Art Museum and Gardens, Up With Trees, First Presbyterian Church, Boy Scouts of America and anyone needing a hand to pull themselves up.
