The AAPG
Grants-in-Aid Fund affords the AAPG Foundation contributors an opportunity
to make a long-term investment, not only in the future of a well-qualified
student, but also in the future of petroleum geology as a science
and profession.
This program
was established in 1956 to support graduate and post-graduate students
in the studies related to earth science aspects of the petroleum energy
industry, including exploration and development of hydrocarbons and
economic sedimentary minerals and relevant applications of environmental
geology.
Grants from
the Grants-in-Aid Program are awarded
in varying amounts up to a maximum of $2000. All applications undergo
the same review process and are ranked by 3 members of the Grants-in-Aid
Committee. Applicants with the highest average rankings, which are
based on various merit criteria and in part, on the financial need,
become grant recipients.
The Named
Grants are a special endowed segment of the AAPG
Foundation Grants-in-Aid Program, and provide a way to give a
gift that will renew itself indefinitely, and at the same time honor
either the donor or someone of his or her choosing.
The Named
Grants program was initiated in the 1970s when friends of the late
Hugh Miser established a memorial fund in the Foundation to award
an annual grant. Since that time 52 Named
Grant endowments are been created. Grants are awarded annually
in amounts ranging from $500 to $2,000.
A one-time
gift or bequest of $12,500 will endow an annual grant of approximately
$500 (the current rate of return is 4%) from investment of the endowment.
Every $5,000 added to the endowment will increase the annual grant
by about $200, up to the maximum of $2,000 per grant.
A company,
an institution, an individual or a group of individuals can endow
a Named Grant. Several Named Grants have been funded by AAPG members
in memory or in honor of family members or colleagues, and vice versa.
It is also possible for a donor to make a gift or bequest for a Named
Grant in his or her own name.
Your support
of the Grants-in-Aid program is important and may be directed toward
either the Regular or the Named Grant Program. Gifts can be made in
honor of someone for special occasions such as retirement, promotions,
special recognition and birthdays. You
