Imagination for the FutureIn Oklahoma we have an old saying, “Dig a well before you get thirsty!” Actually, I think it is an old Chinese proverb, but, in any case, it translates well into Okie and fundraising. For the past year and one-half, the Trustees, a few Trustee Associates and staff have worked on the basics for a comprehensive fundraising program. The steering committee members are Jack Threet, Jim Gibbs, Bob Ardell, Fred Dix, David Lange and myself. The program is primarily designed to interest individual donors with projects that stimulate the imagination. Oliver Wendell Holmes said that “Man’s mind once stretched by a new idea, never regains its original dimension.” That is certainly our goal in developing this program. Earlier this year, the Trustees met and staff made presentation of a business plan for fundraising. As a result, three critical decisions were made—1) Rebecca Griffin was hired full-time to replace Diane Keim, 2) the Trustees approved funds to hire fundraising consultant, Ken Stroman, to evaluate the fundraising plan, and 3) the Trustees gave provisional approval to hire a full-time project manager to implement the fundraising plan. We are extremely excited about the opportunities for both the Foundation and Association in developing the program. There are many deserving needs for public and professional outreach and education in the geosciences. With increasing costs, it is becoming increasing difficult financially for both the Foundation and Association to provide the services that our members require to assist them in their professional development. The well is “not dry,” but now is the time to start “digging for the future.” Albert Einstein said that “Imagination is more important than knowledge.” With this plan we are trying to provide a little of both. Rick Personnel NoteIn March, Diane Keim resigned to stay at home with her child. Diane and Rodger are also expecting another addition to their family. We appreciate Diane’s work and we wish her and her growing family well in their future. Rebecca Griffin has agreed to become AAPG’s new Foundation Coordinator. Rebecca has done a great job as student Grants-in-Aid coordinator, and we have re-defined the Foundation Coordinator’s job description to include Grants-in-Aid. Rebecca will provide excellent service to the Foundation in her new position. |
