Foundation Energy Resources Library

We are always amazed when word reaches us that AAPG members, and even some Trustee Associates don’t know about the AAPG Foundation Energy Resources Library. Rick Fritz told us while recently presenting a paper entitled “Red Fork Sandstone of Oklahoma: Depositional History, Sequence Stratigraphy and Reservoir Distribution” he was surprised to learn only three people, out of 100 in the audience had heard about the Foundation Library. One person was so pleased to learn of our services he immediately became an AAPG member.

Library records kept since 1996 indicate our usage has grown by 150 percent. Last year we helped over 2,000 people and handled close to 5,000 individual transactions. An individual transaction covers such areas as literature searching (utilizing either GeoRef, AAPG Datapages or the internet), photocopy or electronic copy of an article, verification of references, statistical research, locating out-of-print publications -- to looking for a lost friend. In addition, we’ve added the ability to borrow books and articles from other libraries through the interlibrary loan system (ILL). Many of our patrons have been very pleased as through ILL we’ve borrowed a number of important older thesis or dissertations which have greatly enhanced their research.

We continue to add new publications and are currently carrying out literature reviews of our affiliated societies in hopes of having a complete hardcopy set within our collection. As a secondary measure, this helps AAPG Datapages in their quest to digitize our sister and affiliated society publications.

Periodically we send brochures and information to these societies informing them of our library and services. With your patronage we hope to build our collection and continue to expand our services well into the 21st Century.
