"Mr. Dix"
Jean and Fred Dix
Most of you know by now that Fred A. Dix, Jr.
died May 30 this year at his home in Tulsa. Fred
was executive director emeritus of both the
AAPG Association and Foundation. Fred had many
special friends and we thank all of you for your calls and
condolences.
Fred was AAPG treasurer in 1972 when then AAPG
President James E. Wilson offered him the job of
executive director. Fred faithfully served that position for
23 years with strong support from his wife, Jean. He
guided the AAPG through several industry cycles during which time the Association
grew tremendously. Fred also helped raise money and develop the current
Foundation portfolio.
He received the Distinguished Service Award in 1983, was named Honorary
Member in 1986 and received AAPG's Special Award in 1998. The Fred A. Dix
Memorial Grant was established by the AAPG Foundation in his honor.
Last year, the Foundation Trustees voted to provide Fred with the “Foundation
Chairman’s Award” that is given each year to Trustee Associates who have provided
special service to the Foundation. Fred was unable to travel to Calgary to accept
the award, but was extremely grateful when Jack Threet told him of the Trustees
decision.
Fred was still working for the Foundation when he passed away. The staff
affectionately and respectfully always referred to Fred as “Mr. Dix.” Many times we
went to Fred and asked for his wisdom about AAPG matters. I, personally, will miss
his sage advice.
Thanks for everything Mr. Dix.
