Foundation Energy Resources Library
Energy Resource librarians
Mary Kay Grosvald and Karen Piqune.
The current information
explosion leaves no science
unaffected. This is true for
geology with a twist. The archival
value of geoscience literature is
far greater than the other
sciences, where information
becomes dated faster. We have
often received requests for
material published in the 1920s.
Where many libraries have the
option of deleting dated, older,
materials from their shelves, the
geology library is obligated to
keep older material because it is
still used. The net result is shelf space being used up to capacity. We
are no exception to this dilemma in the Foundation Library.
Electronic storage has been a help, but the reality is most material is
still only in hard copy.
In order to temporarily relieve some of our tightening shelf space,
we recently evaluated and eliminated some material, relocated other
material, and expanded areas that are
growing. We were fortunate to have a
summer student intern complete the
actual physical move for us. We have a
little breathing space for now, but are
looking to a long term solution to the
shelf space crunch.
A preferred solution would be to
replace the current library shelves with
a high density mobile storage system.
A high density mobile storage system
consists of library shelves mounted on
rollers that can be moved, drawn
together or opened for easy access.
Such a system would greatly increase our shelf capacity and allow an
increase of our collection.
Unfortunately this would be an expense beyond the
normal operating cost of the library. We hope that future funding
from the Foundation will make this plan a reality. We are counting
on your continued support.
