AAPG Foundation Award for Excellence in the Teaching of Natural Resources in the Earth Sciences K-12

The AAPG Foundation's annual award of $5,000 was given to Ms. Gentry who is a K-12 teacher for Excellence in the Teaching of Natural Resources in the Earth Sciences. The award was given at the 2012 Annual Convention at Long Beach, CA on April 23, 2012.

Each participating local geological society will select a local recipient. The local geological society recipients will be submitted to their appropriate AAPG Section and they will choose a candidate from among them. The AAPG Section candidates will then be submitted to AAPG Foundation for selection of the recipient by the AAPG Youth Educational Activities Committee panel of judges.

The award includes $2,500 to the recipient's school and $2,500 for the recipient's personal use. In addition, the recipient will receive an expense-paid trip to the Annual Convention and Exhibition (ACE) to receive the award. The 2013 ACE will be at Pittsburg, PA.

2013 Deadline Information

  1. October 15, 2012 - Deadline for teachers to have their applications submitted to their respective geological societies. The application would consist of material taught during the academic calendar year that would have ended in the spring/summer prior to this October date.
  2. November 15, 2012 - Deadline for geological societies to turn in their selected candidate to their respective AAPG Section.
  3. December 14, 2012 - Deadline for the AAPG Sections to turn in their selected candidate to the AAPG Foundation. The AAPG Foundation would give the finalist of candidates to the panel of judges.
  4. January 15, 2013- Deadline for the judges to select the recipient.

Teachers may apply directly to their local geological society; or if they do not know their local society, they should submit their entries to the Foundation by October 15th, 2012. The application will be forwarded to the appropriate local geological society for their nomination process. Local deadlines vary. Entries received too late for 2013 will be submitted for 2014.
