Gunn joined the AAPG Foundation Trustee Associates in 1978, contending that he was the first member, contributing even before the organization was officially established. He has supported many of the Foundation’s programs over the years.
In 2012, Gunn donated $1 million to the AAPG Foundation's General Fund. His reason for giving, he said, was because he has received so much.
Gunn, a nationally noted petroleum geologist, was honored by his son, Vincent, in a 1997 AAPG Bulletin article recognizing him as that year’s Sidney Powers award recipient as “having two all-consuming passions: to become a successful scientist, and to leave his profession and his world in better condition than he found them.” Sixteen years later, we can vouch that he has most definitely succeeded in both. The AAPG Foundation would like to recognize Bob Gunn for his commitment to the scientific community, as is evident in his support of the AAPG Foundation.
Gunn received his award at the AAPG Annual Convention and Exhibition, which was held May 19th-22nd in Pittsburgh, PA.
He and his wife, Carol, live in Graford, Texas.
