1892-1974

Raymond Cecil Moore was born in Roslyn, Washington, the son of a Baptist minister. He received an A.B. degree in geology from Denison University in 1915 and a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1916.

Upon graduation from the University of Chicago, he accepted a position with the Kansas Geological Survey and Kansas University where he spent his entire career, serving both as state geologist and as chairman of the department of geology. He founded the “Treatise of Invertebrate Paleontology” which is an ongoing project at Kansas University. In 1973, the new office building for the Kansas Geological Survey was named the Raymond C. Moore Hall.

Dr. Moore received the highest honors given by most of the organizations with which he was associated, including the AAPG’s Sidney Powers Medal and the SEPM’s Twenhofel Medal. He was a founding member of AAPG, and served as editor of the BULLETIN from 1920 to 1926, during which time he established many of the standards that persist today.

Dr. Moore’s citation for the Powers Medal was published in the Bulletin in Vol. 43, No. 7 (July 1959), on pages 1738-1787. His citation for the Twenhofel Medal was published in the Journal of Sedimentary Petrology, Vol. 43, No. 3 (Sept. 1973), pages 920-921.
