1884-1969

Hugh Miser was born in Pea Ridge, Arkansas, and attended college at the University of Arkansas where he received Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in geology in 1908 and 1912 respectively. While a graduate student, he began working for the United States Geological Survey and spent his entire career there, with the exception of brief leaves of absence during which he taught for a year at the University of Arkansas and later served for a year as the state geologist of Tennessee.

As chief of the fuels branch of the USGS from 1928 to 1947, his geologic interests were both nationwide and international. His love, however, remained the areas of Arkansas and Oklahoma where he had roots. He was instrumental in producing the first geologic maps of both Arkansas and Oklahoma.
