Martin D. (Marty) Hewitt was born in Hamilton Ontario, Canada’s “Steel City”, in 1959.  His interest in geology was kindled when growing up proximal to the Niagara escarpment and through discussions with his cousin, Brian Pratt, a geology professor at the University of Saskatchewan and fellow graduate of McMaster University in Hamilton.  Marty obtained his B.Sc. in geology from McMaster in 1982 and his MBA from the University of Calgary in 1991.

Marty’s career in the industry began as an intern at Petro-Canada in Calgary Alberta after his Junior year at McMaster.  Following that summer, Marty realized that he wanted to pursue a career working in the petroleum industry.  Marty started at Petro-Canada full time after graduation and worked in various exploration, development and planning roles in the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin, offshore Eastern Canada and the North Sea for the next 18 years.  In 2000, Marty moved to PanCanadian Petroleum in Calgary exploring the Gulf of Mexico and after PanCanadian’s merger with AEC to form EnCana, as Exploration Manager for Alaska and Group Lead for the Weyburn miscible flood in Saskatchewan. In 2006, Marty left EnCana for Nexen Petroleum in Calgary to work in the International Business Development group, International Planning & Economics group and as Exploration Manager for the Gulf of Mexico, first in Dallas and then in Houston. In 2013, Marty resigned from Nexen and repatriated to Calgary.

Marty’s professional memberships include the AAPG, CSPG, SEG, SPE, GSL and HGS.  He is a licensed professional geoscientist in Alberta and is a certified petroleum geologist through the AAPG’S Division of Professional Affairs serving as the Division’s President in 2011- 2012.  Marty has been recognized with the CSPG's President's Award in 2005, the AAPG’s Distinguished Service Award in 2006 and the AAPG’s House of Delegates Honorary Member of the House Award in 2010 and Honorary Membership in the AAPG in 2014.

Marty and his wife Anne Parsonage currently reside in Calgary, Alberta. Their two children, Joey and Katie, also live in southern Alberta.
