Requirements and Guidelines

Eligible students can apply for $500 to $3,000 grants to cover expenses directly related to their thesis work such as field work, laboratory analyses, etc. Funds cannot be used for capital equipment, software, conferences, salaries, tuition, or room and board during the school year. Grants are based on merit, and in part, the financial needs of the applicant.

Provide email addresses for both your Project Supervisor and your Department Chair. Once you submit your application, they will be emailed a link from Submittable to endorse your application. IMPORTANT: Two endorsements are required for your application to be considered.

Scoring Your Application

The Grants-In-Aid Committee scores each application at least three times. Scoring is based on the following:

Student's academic and employment history (0-10 points)
Scientific merit of proposal (0-30 points)
Suitability to program objectives (0-30 points)
Financial merit of proposal (0-20 points)
Endorsement by faculty or department advisor (0-10 points)

Eligibility Requirements

Graduate level students whose thesis research has application to the search for and development of petroleum and energy-mineral resources, and/or to related environmental geology issues, are eligible to apply for the Grants-in-Aid program.

Award recipients must be enrolled in a Masters or Ph.D. program or the equivalent. Four-year degrees or B.S. with honors are not eligible for grants. Students are eligible for a grant twice in their graduate studies (Masters and Ph.D. studies combined).

Non-U.S. Applicants: The AAPG Foundation must adhere to sanctions and regulations as set forth by the U.S. Department of Treasury. If you are unsure as to whether sanctions have been placed on your country of residence, please review the list of sanctioned countries to determine if you are eligible for a Grants-in-Aid award at this time.

All applications are held confidentially by the AAPG Foundation and access is limited to the student, the Grants-in-Aid Committee and the Foundation Staff. Grantee, by submission of this application and if selected as a recipient, grants to the Foundation permission to use photographs, logos, published/printed information, and any other materials supplied by Grantee without further notice in press releases and/or other publications of the Foundation.

Grants to successful applicants are made in U.S. dollars via direct deposit or wire transfer to students living outside the U.S. Students selected to receive grants will be contacted by the AAPG Foundation concerning banking information. A grant will not be sent to a third party or a third party account.
