Two military veterans plus the dependent of a veteran, all of whom aspire to have careers as professional geoscientists, have been selected as this year’s recipients of the AAPG Foundation’s Deana and Paul Strunk Military Veterans Scholarships. They become the 51st, 52nd and 53rd recipients of the Foundation’s MVSP, the first scholarships of which were awarded in 2015.

Two dynamic and dedicated leaders who helped guide the AAPG Foundation during important years of growth and global impact have been chosen to receive its top two awards for 2023. This year’s honorees – both AAPG Honorary Members and veterans of the AAPG Executive Committee – are: M. Ray Thomasson, this year’s recipient of the L. Austin Weeks Memorial Medal, and Larry L. Jones, this year’s recipient of the Chairman’s Award.

Two popular and innovative geoscience instructors – one a high school teacher in Oklahoma, the other an assistant professor in Louisiana – have been named the recipients of this year’s top geoscience educator awards presented by the AAPG Foundation. They are: Shannon Chatwin, a science teacher at Owasso High School in Oklahoma, and Davide Oppo, Pioneer Production endowed professor of geology and faculty adviser at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.

Explorer Foundation Update

A familiar name has been given a new role and responsibility for the AAPG Foundation, which itself is intensifying its efforts to build support and community among Foundation advocates. Rick Fritz, a past AAPG president and, before that, executive director of both AAPG and the AAPG Foundation, has been named chair of AAPG Foundation Advancement – a new position created to develop and maintain a community of donors.

The first-year results are in, and the results are good – in terms of immediate success, certainly, but also in what they mean for the future. Nearly 70 Ukrainian geoscientists – unexpected refugees due to war in their homeland – received a foothold in their professional transitions this past year, thanks largely to the AAPG Foundation. The Foundation’s support, in turn, was provided because one AAPG member saw not just a need but also a way to provide humanitarian and professional aid to these distressed geoscientists – a concept that meshed perfectly with the Foundation’s mission.

William E. “Bill” Gipson, an Honorary AAPG Member and a stalwart, award-winning supporter of the AAPG Foundation and Foundation Trustee Associates, died March 23. He was 98.
